Upcycled Candles: Backyard Candles Review

I’m a big candle person. I like all kinds, from fancy brands to Target impulse buys. If it smells nice, I’ll use it, and I’m always looking for new brands to try. Backyard Candles is a really fun brand that creates all of their candles inside of coconut shells!

Backyard Candles was founded by Justin Healy when he bought a coconut for a beverage and then was left with the empty shell. He decided to turn it into a candle, and after nine months of testing scents, the company was formed in November of 2017!

The candles were originally intended for outdoor use for ambiance and to help keep bugs away. They’re made with all natural soy wax, cotton or wood wicks, and pure therapeutic grade essential oils, such as citronella and lemongrass.

Backyard Candles has expanded to represent all backyards, with candles inspired by the elements and available in vessels beyond coconuts: the Earth Collection is in concrete, the Air Collection in glass, the Water Collection in coconut, and the Fire in ceramic vessels.

I received three of the candles in the coconut vessel to try and they’re so unique! These are the Medium Half-Shell Coconut Candle and they hold a 5.5 ounce candle. The wax is a premium blend of soy and coconut and the fragrances are phthalate-free and made with essential oils. The real coconut shell is also buoyant and can float in water by half an inch. They also come with a candle cover that’s actually a seed packet sheet that can be planted! The packaging is also 100 percent biodegradable, making this upcycled candle very environmentally-friendly.

I received the Fallen Leaves, Cinnamon Sugar Cookie, and Blueberry Cheesecake scents. The Fallen Leaves and Cinnamon Sugar Cookie are especially perfect for fall (the Fallen Leaves candle is pictured burning above). The scent throw is very strong, so if you like a candle that will fill a large space, this one is for you. I can see how they would work well outdoors due to the scent throw.

There are so many different scents to choose from, from warm gourmands like the ones I received to florals like Sea Salt and Orchid, masculine scents like Teakwood and Tobacco, and clean scents like Sun Dried Linen.

One thing to note is that the medium sized candle has as single wick and a large diameter, so it takes a few hours for it to fully burn across for a clean burn. Light these when you have time to let them burn fully (otherwise you risk them tunneling/not burning evenly).

Bottom Line: Backyard Candles are a well-made, eco-friendly candle at an affordable price point. I am impressed by their strong scent throw and variety of scents available. These make a great gift for yourself or someone you care about!
