JunkTheory: Recyclable, Earth-Powered Skincare

Many things go into a great skincare product: ingredients, efficacy, and even packaging. With JunkTheory, all of these combine to make a product you can feel good about using!

*Disclaimer: These products were sent to See, Shop, Love! in exchange for an honest review.

JunkTheory was founded by Allie and Justin, friends with a shared history of working for mission-driven companies and projects. Their belief that business can be used as a tool for good instead of pursuit of profit led to the creation of a skincare company that prioritizes people and the planet.

The name “JunkTheory” came about from the belief that they could create products that aren’t made from junk and don’t become junk after being consumed. All of their products are made in Southern California, are cruelty-free certified through The Leaping Bunny, and have certified vegan formulas through Vegan Action.

I received JunkTheory’s full line of three products, all of which are packaged in metal jars and tins that arrived in a fully recyclable cardboard box. JunkTheory uses metal instead of plastic because it is infinitely recyclable, lightweight, and durable. They even have ideas on their site about how you can repurpose their containers!

The JUNI Juniper Biome Cleanser is a gentle daily cleanser made with blue-green algae, sugar beet extracts, and aloe to help skin feel soft and hydrated. It removes makeup and impurities without stripping skin of its natural protective acid mantle. It has a light scent of Pacific Woods and Rain originated from essential oils.

While I normally don’t like a scented cleanser, the essential oils in JUNI didn’t irritate my skin at all (plus, the scent is beautifully woodsy!). The cleanser is a gel formula that foams ever-so-slightly, so if you’re used to using something that foams up a lot, this will be an adjustment. That being said, the lack of bubbles doesn’t make it any less effective. You can even use it twice if you double cleanse (which I do).

The CAMO Chamomile Hyaluronic Moisturizer (pictured right) is a daily moisturizer formulated with sodium hyaluronate and niacinamide, which are sensitive humectants that help keep moisture in the skin. It also contains chamomile, algae, ginger, and grapeseed oil to fight inflammation and oxidative stress. It has a medium weight, creamy texture, and is unscented.

The moisturizer is a bit heavier than what I normally use for the day and I prefer it as a nighttime moisturizer, but it can definitely be used for both. I have oily skin that gets very glassy (in a not fun way) in the summer humidity, so this would likely be too heavy for daily use for me. I could see it being perfect for someone with dry to normal skin. I don’t want to discourage anyone with oily skin from trying this; however, as it is a soothing and effective moisturizer.

You can boost your routine with the PALO Plum Algae Overnight Treatment, which is meant to be used as an evening moisturizer. I have actually been using this as an overnight mask on top of the CAMO moisturizer.

PALO is made with lipids, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and AHAs that work while you sleep to repair skin and lock in hydration. It’s scented with Mountain Lavender essential oils. My skin felt so soft the next morning after using this!

Bottom Line: I enjoyed all three of JunkTheory’s skincare products, especially the JUNI cleanser. Even though I have oily skin and the CAMO moisturizer was a bit heavier in texture, it still felt great on my skin and absorbed quickly. The PALO overnight treatment is a wonderful nighttime moisturizer. If you’re looking to support a company that’s doing great things for the planet, JunkTheory is an excellent choice!
